PINEVILLE--The Coalfields Expressway Authority met at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 28, 1998, for its regular monthly meeting.
Coalfields Expressway Authority Executive Director Richard Browning explained to the authority that he had discussed with Sam Beverage, Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Highways, the Coalfields Expressway Authority's alignment recommendation for the highway.
In May the authority endorsed Alternative E from the I-64/77 interchange near Beckley, WV, to the intersection of Alternative F just past Mullens, WV. From there, Alternative F was recommended until it reached Bradshaw, WV. From Bradshaw to the Virginia state line, the authority conditionally recommended Alternative D or D1, based on Virginia's routing of the highway.
Browning stated that Beverage told him that the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVWVDOH) liked the authority's recommendation with the exception of the routing from Mullens to Beckley. James Colby, WVWVDOH's representative on the authority, explained that other routing plans were being considered for the area and emphasized that a final decision had not been made.
Browning informed the authority members that he had been in contact with Governor Underwood's office concerning the announcement of the final route of the highway. The authority has requested that Governor Underwood make the announcement at an appearance in one of the counties the highway traverses.
Browning unveiled copies of new booklets to the authority members promoting the highway. Browning explained that copies of the booklets are available for the public at the authority's office in Pineville during regular business hours.
In other business, the authority voted to purchase billboards and airplane banners as a way of promoting the highway.
The next meeting of the Coalfields Expressway Authority will be at 10:00 AM on September 24, 1998, at the authority offices in Pineville, WV.
